NO SPECIAL RULE FOR CIVIL SERVANTS.

A fine of' £7 10s for carrying on the business of a bookmaker was imposed in the Police Court on Maurice Goodman, aged 28, employed by the Railway Department as a cleaner.

The police stated accused ran a £lO to Is double on the last Auckland meeting. Counsel, in asking for suppression of accused’s name, said that a conviction would result in dismissal from employment. The Magistrate said he could not make* a special rule for the sake of Civil Servants, because under Departmental Regulations they would be liable to dismissal. He did not think that was m sufficient reason.
