BULLS-SANSON HIGHWAY
CONSTRUCTION COSTS,
At Tuesday’s meeting of-the Manawatu County Council the engineer (Mr. (L Hickford) submitted a schedule of costs of construction on the Bulls-Sanson highway. The total cost of the work, the report stated, worked out at £IS 19s fid per chain and the estimated cost was £l7 11s 6d per chain. The reasons given for the increase were as follows: —(1) The cost of metal delivered ex tram was 1/- per yard higher than estimated, making a total cost of 25/- per chain higher and (2) the application of clay for blinding was not allowed for in the estimates, this being a recommendation of Mr. Littlcjolni, of the Public Works Department, and cost an extra 1(>/5A per chain. These two items, the'report stated, should be added lo the estimate to show the true position for the purpose of making a comparison. The report further pointed out that the length of road was only a short one, and did not afford suflicient scope for efficient and economical handling of plant and machinery, but in the engineer's-opinion the estimates for surface sealing and completion of the road £l2 2s per chain —were ample, and would allow a first-class job to he made.
The council were of the opinion that the work was being done on a thoroughly efficient and economical basis, and it was decided to push ahead with construction.
