RIVER PROTECTION
MAXAWATU-OROUA SCHEME. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, Cr. li. Hunt mentioned that he had heard that the Manuwatu-Oroua River Board intended carrying out its comprehensive river protection work piecemeal, and he wanted to know what the position of local bodies cited for contribution towards the cost would he under those proposals. The county clerk (Mr A. K. Drew) said that the Board could not go ahead with its work until it received the sanction of the Government, and with this statement tlie chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) agreed, saying that until the engineer’s scheme, as at present outlined, was put before the ratepayers and the Government for sanction, nothing could be done. The discussion lapsed without further comment.
