LOCAL GOVERNMENT.

STRONG DOMINION FEATURE,

It was an asset to have men in Parliament who had a knowledge of local body work and administration stated the Minister of Finance (the Hon. Wl Dowriie Stewairt) at a luncheon tendered him by the Mayor and councillors of Feilding recently.

New Zealand’s system of local body givernment had been developed along the lines of that in existence in Great Britain many centuries ago, which had been copied throughout the world. It was one of the great glories of Great Britain that she had taught the world how to govern locally. In other parts of the world the tendency of local body government was to develop into bureaucracies, but in New Zealand local government was one of the strong features of national life.

“Local government work in New Zealand fills me with admiration,” continued the Minister. “Throughout New Zealand men are rendering invaluable services to the community, usually meeting with a great deal of hostile criticism and getting very little of the compensations that come to a man in general politics who gets paid for his services.”
