BREACH OF GAMING ACT.

Arthur Owen and Cornelius Patterson were charged before the Magistrate this morning with alleged breaches of the Gaming Act. The former was charged with using his hairdresser’s premises as a common gaining house, and the latter with assisting Owen in the conduct of the business. In addition six ( barges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting was preferred against Owen. The accused pleaded not guilty. Inspector Eccles stated that the prosecution was the result of a raid on May 7th. Betting materials were found in the shop, and bets would be shown to have taken place. After a short adjournment, Mr Wauchope, for the defence, said he had had a conference with the inspector and his client, and an arrangement had been made. He would now plead guilty on behalf of Owen.
When the charge against Patterson was called a plea of guilty was entered also.
Inspector Eccles asked leave to withdraw the charges of frequenting the street for the purposes of betting. The Magistrate fined Owen the maximum £IOO and costs, and Patterson £2O and costs.
