THE SANATORIUM ROAD

SARCASTIC COUNTY COUNCILLORS.

Some years ago the Manawatu County Council constructed a road to the local seaside, and made a deviation at a considerable and unnecessary cost to the contributing bodies, namely the Awahou riding,. Borough Council and Beach residents. The stupid blunder has never been explained. Access to I lie Beach is per medium of a dangerous cut ting, and vehicles have to take to the water at high tide. A road to avoid such inconveniences lias been formed by the Harbour .Board, which leads to the Sanatorium, and it was decided by the Harbour Board to dedicate this to the Countv.

At yesterday's meeting of the Manawatu County Council the Harbour Board informed that body that Ihe road had been dedicated., Cr. .1. McKelvie: “Wo don’t want it.”

The chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) explained that there was a movement afoot to take the main road along (he hack of the cottages anil past the children's homo, thus bringing the. traffic into the centre of the beach. He had been met by the Beach Committee and its chairman and had suggested that the Committee ascertain whether the residents were prepared to raise a loan for the work, and that if satisfactory the County might possibly allow its engineer to make the estimates. He explained to the deputation that before the Council could do the work it would be necessary to dedicate the land to the County.

"How they came to this decision T don’t know, but the pressure of traffic will make the road a necessity in time as the place is a seaside resort,” concluded the (‘hairman. The cleric (Mr. A, K. Drew) explained that the land concerned was 11 v leasehold, but apart from that the Council wottl/1 probably experience no end of difficulty in collecting rates as there appeared lu he enough trouble in I he collection of some of the rent. -It was very kind of them to give j| to us” sarcastically remarked Cr. Eagan. The letter was merely received.
