FINED FOR BETTING WITH BOOKMAKER.
ILLUSORY WAY OF ADDING TO
CAPITAL.
Dannevirke, Last Night,
Cases arising out of the recent raid on premises occupied by Alfred Vivian Whitta at Christchurch, appeared before Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M., in Dannevirke to-day, when Percy John Barton admitted betting with Whitta on Bth February, 1927.
The police said that as the result of the raid in Christchurch certain documents were seized by the police, amongst them being one which went to show that defendant had bet with the bookmaker.
When interviewed by the police defendant readily admitted it. Mr Blakiston, for accused, said he was a blacksmith in a small way, a widower with eight children, and had made a bet apparently with the idea of augmenting his income. He asked for a light penalty. His Worship said he did not know any more illusory way of adding to one’s income than by betting on horse-racing. Defendant ~ was liable to a penalty of £IOO. Seeing this was the first case in the district he would fine him £5 and costs 10s.
Kenneth Matheson, similarly charged, was likewise linel.
