The above senior ' match was played on the Foxton racecourse on Saturday afternoon 1 before a fair crowd of spectators. It was anticipated that the game would be closely contested, but few anticipated that Awahou would go down to the tune of 25 to 5. Moses took the field early in the game and replaced Renata, who met with an injury and had to retire, and it was thought that his inclusion would stop the aggressive blues. Moses made openings for Alwahou and did some conspicuous individual work, but the dashing back division of the blues could not be held. Included in the Awahou team were the following last year Foxton club’s seniors: Taylor, Westwood, Fuller, Reid, Hakaraia, Thompson, O’Reilly, Kreshanko, Cresswell, McDonald, Moses and fluff (a last year Foxton Junior). The balance of the team was composed of Eparaima, Harrison and Renata. County was represented by Webber, N. McDonald, Warren, Gleeson, J. McDonald, T. Paratn, Chisholm, Morgan, R. McDonald, A. Greig, Dunn, Bond (captain), Stewart, Ransfield and Robinson. Gleeson, who is suffering from an injury, played full back. County (blue) set up an attack followed by a passing movement in which Parata, J. McDonald, Webber, Bond and R. McDonald participated. Reid and Hakaraia stopped the onrush, but blues were not to be denied and Fuller was called upon to stop another attacking rush by finding the line. Warren semiring from the ruck transferred to J. McDonald who raced over. R. McDonald took the kick from a difficult angle and failed. COUNTY 3 AWAHOU NIL.
Some forward work in the centre ensued and Parata broke away and a free kick to Awahou relieved the pressure. Again the blue backs got moving but Greig nullified by passing forward. Awahou were now busy defending. Dunn secured and crossed over. McDonald failed with the kick. COUNTY 6 AWAHOU NIL.
Parata got away and short punted and Hakaraia secured a mark, which shifted play near the centre, where Awahou secured a free kick, which Gleeson returned. Reid put in a run but blues securing rushed on and Taylor found the line. A passing movement by the blues was stopped by a forward pass and Taylor essayed a shot at the goal from half way. Some faulty handling by Awahou allowed the blues to gain ground.' Mqses now replaced Renata. Another blue infringement gave relief to Awahou. Reid failed to handle the ball and blues rushed play to Awahou line, where Awahou forwards cleared, but Gleeson sent the ball back into touch. Taylor saved a rush by a lucky speculator and Fuller- cleverly intercepted a . blue pass, but again blues were knocking at Awahou’s door. Moses fed out to his backs, but faulty handling gave little advantage. Warren secured and evaded the opposing backs and crossed under the posts. Gleeson ‘made no mistake with the kick. ' ' COUNTY 11 AWAHOU NIL.
Give and take play ensued and Fuller put in a run and found the line. J. McDonald took a flying pass but was well grassed by Moses. Westwood got moving and transferred play to centre but blues came back with a hustling forward rush and Taylor mishandled but Hakaraia was handy and found the line. Another passing movement by blues swooped down and kept Fuller and Reid busy. An infringement by blues transferred play to centre at half time. County again made the game open and Awahou accepted a force. Taylor shortly after found the line and staved off a dangerous attack. A passing blue back movement ended in J. McDonald transferring to Warren who beat the opposition and crossed. Gleeson failed with the kick. COUNTY 14 AWAIIOU NIL.
Awahou now bucked up and set up an attacking movement in which Reid, Westwood, Fuller Moses and Hindu were prominent, but the blues came back. Moses and Fuller countered.' Webber secured and passed to McDonald to Parata and back to McDonald who crossed. McDonald failed with the kick, COUNTY 17 AWAHOU NIL.
Awahou now livened up, Thompson and Taylor doing good work. From a scrum on the twenty-five the ball came out to Fuller who put in a good short run to score in a good position. Taylor converted. COUNTY 17, AWAHOU 5.
Awahou had County defending strenuously but not for long. R. McDonald was prominent, but kicked too hard, Westwood forcing. Almost immediately he had another try scoring in a handy position. J. McDonald converted.
COUNTY 22 AWAHOU 5. Taylor followed up the kick well but knocked on. County infringed in the scrum, Taylor’s kick falling short of the crossbar. A few minutes later Webber- was again prominent getting over well out. R. McDonald missed with the kick. COUNTY 25 AWAHOU 5. Up and down play ensueg, Moses (Awahou) tricking the opposition with a penalty by kicking low and short to catch and nearly get over. Just before half time, Rankin potted a goal, the spell ending 4 t,o nil in favour of Foxton. Shortly after the kick off J. Scott, from a forward attack, got over and Huff converted—Foxton 9, Shannon nil. Shannon then set. up an attack, and had hard luck in not crossing. Up and down play then ensued. From a scramble in front of Shannon’s goal, Huff secured, and beating the defending backs, got over. He converted his own try. Foxton 14, Shannon nil. Play was now very willing, and following an attacking movement by Shannon, B. Robinson scored. The major points were hot added. Foxton 14, Shannon 3.
