HISTORIC GATHERING AT ‘ CANBERRA. SPEECH BY THE DUKE OF' YORK. MESSAGE FROM THE KING. , •- Canberra, May 9. Favoured by fine lexhilirating weather, the Duke and Duchess of York to-day, with regal pomp and ceremonial, fulfilled the central objective of their visit to the King’s Southern Dominions by the opening of. the new home of the Federal Parliament at the new Federal Capital of Canberra, for splendour and historic importance the raxt outstanding event in the historyyPfc « the Commonwealth. A great gathering of all the notables of Australia also included representatives * of the British, Canadian, South African, New Zealand and Indian Parliament^.
A. splendid block of luxuriously furnished Parliamentary Buildings, with the Government House and other official structures upon which, and the lay-out' of the new capital, millions have already been spent, form the nucleus of the proposed city beautiful, situated in one of the grandest, most picturesque, and most salubrious districts of Australia within easy reach of the seaboard and destined to be a centre of, and incentive to, widespread development over the present spar-sly-populated area with a seaport at Jervis Bay, to which the proclaimed Federal Territory extends.
