CHEQUE IN BALLOT BOX
BUSINESS MAN’S LOSS
RECOVERED BY POLL STAFF.
The privilege of exercising the franchise in the municipal elections on Wednesday caused an Auckland business man some subsequent anxiety (says the Herald).
With the multiplicity of papers handed him by the poll clerk, the elector retired to a booth and there lie added at least one of his own, a cheque for £ISOO. It was not until the next day that the loss was noticed, and, on the brief chance that he may have included the valuable consideration in his ballot papers, the elector advised the city returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley. The staff engaged on the official counting of the votes was appraised of the loss and a close watch was maintained when the papers from the booth concerned were opened. The cheque was found in one of the bunbles and it was a delighted and surprised man who received a communication from Mr. Notley acquainting him with the find.
