MANAWATU OR PALMERSTON?
COUNTY COUNCIL’S OBJECTIONS.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council the following resolution was read from the Foxton Chamber of Commerce: —
“That this Chamber, whilst expressing no objection to Palmerston North changing its name, takes strong exception to the suggested name of Manawatu being substituted for that of Palmerston North.” A letter was also received from John Kebbell, of Levin, protesting against the selection of the name Manawatu and recommending, in the event of the Council being of the same opinion, that a protest be forwarded" to the Prime Minister, as he feared that Palmerston North may seek an order in Council approving of the name Manawatu. The chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) considered that the Council should register an emphatic protest against the selection of the name Manawatu. It would lead to endless confusion.
Cr. McKelvic also agreed remarking that Palmerston North could select any other name but not Manawatu.
“If they want to alter the name they can but I’m dead against it being 'called Manawatu,” said Cr. Boyce. “After all it is only a small portion of the Manawatu and it would lead to considerable confusion.”
“I think we ought: to protest against Palmerston North using the name of Manawatu,” said Cr. Pearce.
It was unanimously decided to protest against the proposal to change the name of Palmerston North to Manawatu.
HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL OBJECTS.
At the last meeting of the Ilorowlienua County Council the proposed changing of the name of Palmerston North to Manawatu was discussed and the Council favoured the continuance of the name of Palmerston North.
