The Duke and Duchess of York arrived at Brisbane yesterday, and were welcomed by enormous crowds in line weather. The city was gaily decorated and a general half-holi-day declared.

Mr and Mrs J. W. Murray are to be entertained at a farewell social by their /Shannon friends next week prior to their departure for Featherston. Mr. Murray had been a “live wire” in the public affairs of Shannon for over twenty years and his departure will leave a gap which will be hard to till in that community.

An Invercargill message reports the death of Mr. Cuthbert Cowan, aged 92 years, a member of Parliament during the Atkinson regime. The late Mr. Cowan was one of the founders of. the Southland Frozen Meat Company, and was for many years a member of the Land Board. He owned extensive property at Kainuva, and was a prominent breeder of Romney sheep.

Probably the only man alive who was born in the lower reaches of Queen Street, Auckland, Sir Edwin Mitcbelson, celebrated his 81st birthday to-day. Born in a little house that stood somewhere about where the palatial offices of the New Zealand Insurance Company now rear their expensive marble head, Sir Edwin has seen Auckland grow from a mere village to a city of nearly 200,000 people. Auckland -was only six years old when he lirst saw the light, and he must be .(he oldest Aucklander living.
