ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE RAIDED

Christchurch, Last Night. Detectives raided premises in Cathedral Square alleged to be used as a common gaming house this af- - ternoon. Armed with a search warrant, Detective-Sergeant Young and Detective Mayne went to room 11 in the It oval Exchange buildings, Cathedral Square, occupied by John Batt, aged 54, and seized a large quantity of materials which the tectives allege were used for bookmaking. Two men who were in tile room at the time of the raid were taken into custody. The room presented the appearance of a printing office, there being two addressagraph machines, typewriters, tape machine, cheque books, ledgers and office appliances of all kinds. While the detectives were in the room several telephone calls were received which were answered by the police. The prints of names on the addressagraph machines number many hundreds. As a result of the raid John Henry Batt and Wm. Henry Cousins (aged 27) appeared before Sir. S. Hurst Seager, J.P., Batt being charged with occupying a common gaming house and Cousins with assisting him. Both men were remanded to appear at the Magistrate’s Court to-morrow. Bail was fixed in self £IOO each and one surety of £IOO each.
