INTER-ISLAND TELEPHONE.
If all goes well, it is expected that the new inter island telephone service will be in full working order by June next. At present, although the main connecting link has been made across Cook Strait, it is not possible to talk by telephone to any part of the South Island other than the north, as the equipment is not complete. Repeating apparatus is necessary at each end of the Strait cable in order to amplify speech and' ensure distinct hearing over long distances. This apparatus has no.w arrived in New Zealand, and it is to be installed at Wellington, and at 'Seddon, in Marlborough, where the cable across the strait touches the South Island. The main telephone line will be strengthened between Seddon and Christchurch.
