FORTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO.
THE FOXTON SANDON ROAD.
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF.
It has often been said that history repeats itself and on looking up our old files we find that this is so, at least in connection with the Foxton-Sandon highway. At this week’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council a letter was received from the Main Highway’s Board asking the Council what the maintenance cost of the Foxton-Sandon road had been during nine months of last year and complaining about the bad state of this road. In February 1880 we find that numerous complaints* were made about the state of this highway by those compelled to use it and a meeting of ratepayers was held in Foxton to discuss the question. At that meeting it was decided “to draw the attention of the County authorities to the present dangerous condition of the Foxton-Sandon Road, the entire length of which has been broken by traffic and was now a mass of Large and dangerous holes.” At that meeting it was recommended that the Council expend £BOO in repairing the road. From the above it appears that this road never has been in a satisfactory state of repair and we wonder if the. trouble really is due. to heavy motor traffic!
