CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held on Thursday evening, presided over by Mr J. K. Hornblow (president). There were also present: Messrs M, E. Perreau, Newton, A'dinore, Barron, Alsop, 'D. Christie, R. McMurray, A. Yeo, C. Pearson, and H. Osborne. An apology for absence on -account of sickness was received from the secretary (Mr R, Hornblow). Correspondence of a formal nature and literature from various associations were received. RURAL POSTAL DELIVERY.
Mr. Newton, local postmaster, said lie bad arranged for a meeting of settlers at Oroua Downs, to discuss a. rural delivery and asked for the co-operation of the Chamber, which had previously discussed the question. The meeting would take place early next week. He submitted a plan of the district proposed to lie served if the settlers decided upon the service. He stated that an area, radiating from Rongotea had already adopted the service. The cost to the settlers was £1 per year. It was his intention to make an inspection of the roads in the, locality and to report on same, to headquarters. A. general discussion ensued and the advantages to settlers pointed our if a rural service were decided upon, radiating from Poston to Moutoa- and the whole of the Oroua Downs district.
It was decided that as many members as could make it convenient accompany the postmaster and attend the meeting, the arrangements''re locomotion to lie left in the hands, of Messrs Barron, Christie and Pearson. CONTINUOUS TELEPHONE. Mr. Barron said the time had arrived when an application should he made for a. continuous telephone service, as there were more than .sufficient subscribers to the local bureau to justify the application. Mr. Newton said that there were about 20 per cent, in excess of the number of subscribers required to justify a continuous service, but he recommended that the application lie held over until those on the wailing list were connected up. — The suggestion was agreed to. P.O. LOBBY BOX. The postmaster (Mr. Newton) said that the private lobby box would be kept open to meet the requirements of box-holders. The President pointed out that the lobby had been used as a Jrind of rest room by certain people and nuisances created. The postmaster stated that proceedings would be taken against any persons creating a nuisance or for being unlawfully on the premises. He also mentioned. that some misehievious person or persons had been interfering with the slot stanlp-machine.—lt was decided to assist the official in putting a stop to these practices. MODERN ROAD-MAKING. Mr McMurray referred to the modern and scientific methods' of road-making as carried out by the British Pavement’s Ltd., in the borough. He said the up-to-date methods if adopted by local bodies would result in a great saving to (lie ratepayers.—lt was resolved to invite Mr. Hemplcmau to deliver a public lecture on modern road making, and to invite representatives of local bodies to attend same. It was also decided to forward a letter pf appreciation to th&jCouneil for its action in laying down streets and footpaths in permanent material. SHIPPING. Mr 11. Osborne submitted figures showing the comparative saving tp merchants and tradespeople, thro : ugh getting their goods through the local port, instead of Wanganui. He pointed out, however, that the drawback was no guarantee for a regular (shipping service. Air Pearson pointed out that so far as-the port was eouccrned there was just, as much water on the bar now as in years gone by. February bad always proved jn bad guonth owing to the easterly winds, etc., affecting the bar. At spring tides there was I.lft of water on the bar.
The opinion was expressed that the proposed cuts in the ManawatuOroua River Board's scheme would greatly improve the port, provided that training walls were erected. STATION LIGHTING. On the motion of Mr Osborne it was decided to recommend to the Railway Department that a light he provided at the South end of the railway station. PARKING PLACES.. In reply to Mr. .Barron, the Mayor said that the Borough Council were considering suitable parking places for mo tor-oars in Main Street. Special provision had already . been -made to park cars in front of the Town Hall. Other minor matters were discussed and the meeting rosp.
