MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL PROTESTS.

AGAINST RIVER COMMISSION’S FINDINGS. 0 The Manawatu-Oroua River Commission’s findings were briefly reviewed at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, when Cr. J. Boyce expressed the opinion that the allocation made by the Commission was most unjust as far as the ratepayers in |he County were concerned. The findings of the Commission really amounted to three separate additional rates. The-Manawatu County’s allocation amounted to about £IO,OOO, whilst a further £SOOO was allocated between the Moutoa and Sluggish River Drainage Boards, both of which bodies were represented by the ratepayers in the county. This amounted.to three separate rates on the ratepayers of the county, should the scheme be proceeded with. He suggested that tlie Council should call a conference of the local bodies concerned with a view of protesting against the allocations. Early action was desirable as the Minister may approve of the scheme and then the Council would have no say.

Councillors agreed that the allocation was unsatisfactory and on the motion of Cr. Boyce and Fagan, it was decided to register an emphatic protest against the allocation made for the county by the River Board Commission.

Interviewed by a press representative, the Mayor of Palmerston remarked that Palmerston’s allocation of £IO,OOO was a large sum, and while the borough would no doubt benefit indirectly to a certain degree if the increased settlement of "county areas eventuated, as anticipated by the River Board, he did not think that the town would benefit to the extent of £7OO a year, which was the amount the borough was called upon to pay annually under the allocation by the Commission.

In conversation with the Town Clerk this morning, in reference to Foxton’s allocation of £I,OOO, Mr Trueman said the matter would probably he discussed by the Council, but he was not in a position to say to what proportionate extent Foxton would be benefited if the scheme is carried out. /
