SHORTAGE OF WATER AT MANGAHAO.
* . It is reported that a similar situation has risen at Mangahao to that of last year—a prolonged dry spell has resulted in a threatened shortage of water in the dams. Power Boards have been recommended to economise as much as possible in the use of light and power, particularly at night, in order to give the big dams a chance to fill up. As was the case last summer, the steam plants belonging to the municipalities of Wellington and Palmerston North have been called on to assist the Public Works Department. The Evans Bay (Wellington) steam plant was put into operation yesterday morning and the Palmerston Borough’s plant at Terrace End followed suit at mid-day. The second dam at Mangahao is now under construction and until if is completed giving greater storage capacity, the scheme will he affected more or less' by drought conditions.
