NEW YEAR’S DAY AT THE SEASIDE.
. A RECORD ATTENDANCE. The fine weather attracted a record number of visitors, estimated at about five thousand, to the local seaside on New Year’s Day. The Beach Improvement Committee specially set aside New Year’s Day as children’s day at the seaside, and a varied programme of athletic events kept both children and parents amused and interested during the greater part of the day. The. various events this year were keenly contested and some exciting finishes wera witnessed. The firm sand on the river foreshore could not be improved upon for running" and cycling and there, was a total absence of drifting sand. "" Hundreds went to the ocean beach and disported themselves in the breakers and indulged in a sun bath, while others sought the shelter of the trees. The day was not marred by any accident and the Harbour Board’s artesian bore provided an abundance of clear sparkling water. A special word of praise is due to the Beach-Committee, Messrs C. H. AVhitehead (chairman), J. Link-, later, MAP., Capt. Larsen, J. Prentice, F. Kirk, P. Spelman, AV. Petersen, E. Petersen, W. Proctor, A. Alsop, and J. Robertson, and others - for the manner in which they kept the children amused. * In the eveuing a dance was helch'-'ij in the hall, which was filled to overflowing.
