Holl, of Auckland. In addition to unpleasant weather, the party had to 'contend with very hard climbing' conditions. The ascent was made from South-eastern 'Arete, loading up the ridge that borders the Wahianoa Glacier. Startling accounts of the eeect of the electrical disturbance are given ’ by the party, and only a strong •spirit of intrepidity could have inspired the climbers to complete the ascent. The lightning, it is reported, appeared to be striking the peak, . y and when within 150 feet of the top shocks were experienced by every .‘ vu member of the party. A further phe- ir'y nonienon to test the mettle of the ,■ < ■ y:’ mountaineers came in the way of an ’ ■ extraordinary buzzing from the steel - J parts of the ice axes, while on reaching the summit, the rocks, which apparently were charged with electricity were hissing like gas jets.'
