BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Fox-ton Borough .Council was helil in the Council Chambers last evening. REPORTS were read and dealt with as follows: - ROAD FOREMAN. The road foreman reported that during the month culverts had been renewed in Purcell St., and No. 1 Line, ruts patched on the Moutoa Rd., and Cook St., hanks of drain repaired in Avenue Rd., Main St. culvert cleaned out and new grating erected at inlet. The road staff has also been engaged in mixing asphalt at the yard, carting pipes to Whyte St. for the water and drainage department, and trimming up the following roads with the grader: Avenue, Moutoa and Sandon Rds., and Purcell St., besides doing general maintenance work. The northern end of Russell St. was also patched. The foreman reported that he proposed giving the whole of this road a. coating of tar, and suggested giving the footpaths in Liddell St. and Ravensworlli Place a top dressing. At present the staff was engaged in mixing asphalt in the yard for the strip of roadway on the western side of the Triangle, and mowing grass in the cemetery. — Adopted. WATER WORKS REPORT. The water works foreman reported as follows: —During the month the tennis courts were connected up with the high pressure water service. A manhole had to he dug up in Whyte St., hut running sand was reached at a depth of four feet, and consequently the work had to be held up in the meantime. During the month 990,000 gallons of water was pumped, the maximum current used being 31 amps. —Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows: From Messrs Barr and Tver, asking why they had not been asked to lender for the window blinds in the new Town Hall. The Clerk reported that the order for blinds was quite a small one, amounting to £4 in all. ITe would not have time to call lenders for every little job that wanted doing. The letter was received. From the Executive, Swimming Baths Carnival, requesting a reduction in the rent charged for the use of the Town Hall for the coronation ceremony. The Clerk pointed out that the rent had only amounted to £2 10/-. Over that amount had been taken at the dance after the coronation, the receipts for which amounted to over £3O. The hire of the new hall had not been increased and was the same ns that which obtained for the old building. It was decided to inform the committee that no reduction could be granted. From the Agricultural College asking the Council for a donation towards the formation of a North Island branch of the League. —It was regretted that owing to the Council’s present financial position, it was unable to make a donation this year, but it noted with appreciation tlie good work the League has set out to do. From the Mayor of Dobson, request the Council to organise a relief appeal for the assistance of the dependants of the victims of the Dobson mine disaster.- —Decided to notify the public that any subscriptions handed in to the Town Clerk will be forwarded on. GENERAL. It was decided, that with the exception of coal, all carting for the Council be done by the borough tractor. A. vote of thanks was accorded Mrs S’. Austin for a donation of library books. It was decided to erect a new range in the poundkeeper’s cottage lo replace'the one that has collapsed.
