QUEEN CARNIVAL EFFORT.

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE ANNOUNCED TO-NIGHT. The long-drawn out queen carnival effort to raise funds for a public swimming baths, will, be brought to a close to-night, when the successful candidate will be announced in the Royal Theatre. At the commencement of the carnival four queen candidates were nominated, representing Fibre (Aliss Aloore), Sports (Miss M. Stevenson), Farmers (Miss Easton) and Citizens’ (Aliss N. Spring). The Farmers’ candidate withdrew, however, and the others have kept up a lively campaign. When we say others, we mean the committees associated with the candidates. Shop days, dances, entertainments, competitions and other attractions have been held to induce the public to “cough up.” And they have “coughed up” generously. Flags displayed in the Triangle have indicated the position of the candidates and in this connection, the Fibre’s colours have rarely been lowered and the general opinion is that the representative of the town’s principal industry will ho uppermost. However, the best of good feeling has existed between all concerned, even if the competition has been keen. All have worked strenuously for the common object —swimming baths, and we hope sufficient money will be raised to enable the Borough Council to put the work in hand. At a suitable juncture in the concert. programme the announcement of the successful candidate will be made and at a later date will be followed by the coronation.
