Commenting on the Levin Boxing Association’s boxing tournament, the Levin Chronicle says:—“The featherweights were T. Holgate (of Foxton, 8.8) and T. Thomas (Wellington, 8.5), who spent the first two rounds mostly in clinches, necessitating the constant attention of the referee. In fighting characterised the third round, with short jabs to the head and body, of which each had his share. Thomas very nearly effected a knock-out in the third round, and Holgate almost turned the tables immediately. In the fourth round the boxers stood off and . boxed, giving a line exhibition. Towards the end of the round, the referee awarded the bout to Thomas, on a foul (hitting with the forearm, technically known as a ‘shamrock’).”
