THE WHIROKINO ROAD
Action should be taken by the Foxton public to bring (pressure upon the Main Highways Board and Manawatu County Council to give some attention to the main highway between the Whirokino Bridge and the borough boundary, which is subject to (inundation by flood wat-* ers, thus cutting off Foxton from southern road , communication, and causing traffic JToni Wellington to Taranaki and Auckland to lie diverted miles out of its course. The Manawatu County Council made all arrangements some two years ago to make a road deviation which would avoid the'flooded area for threeparts of the affected roadway, leaving about half a mile of roadway, from the main drain to the Whirokino Bridge to be attended to". This portion of the road would have to be raised, and protected —an undertaking presenting no engineering difficulties. It appears that both the Manawatu County and the Highways Board are totally indifferent as to what is happening and will continue in blissful somnolence until aroused by an indignation meeting. In our opinion the protection of this highway against flood waters is of far greater importance to Foxton and the travelling public than is the construction of a bridge at Moutoa, and the present scandalous waste of public money in connection with the ferry fuddle in that locality.
