CAPTAIN WILLIAMSON’S DEATH.
“GROUNDLESS RUMOURS.”
A verdict that Captain R. A. Williamson was drowned in tho Wellington harbour, on or about September 15th, but that there was no evidence to show how he had got into the water, was returned by the Coroner (Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) at the inquest held in Wellington on Thursday. Captain Foster, marine superintendent of the Union Company, gave evidence that, acting under instructions, deceased arrived in Wellington on the morning of September 15th, from Auckland. He had reported at the head office of the Company at 0.35 a.m., leaving again at 9.50 a.m. He was instructed to return again at noon, but did not do so.
Witness stated that rumours current about, the deceased were without foundation and groundless. Appoint which had needed clearing had been explained to the company’s entire satisfaction. Detective Tricklebank said that he was well acquainted with deceased. He met him at 11 a.m. on September 15th. Deceased appeared to be normal, but remarked that, he was very tired after his journey. Witness last saw Captain Williamson walking towards Thorndon- ~ After evidence of identification had been given, the Coroner delivered his verdict as set out above, remarking that there was nothing to show that deceased ivas in anything but normal health.
