HASSELL GARLAND’S ESTATE.

8/- IN THE £l. Auckland, Oct. 7. Creditors of the estate of the late Hassell George de F. Garland met to-day, when the Official Assignee (Mr Fisher) made a statement as to the situation. Mr Fisher said after going into the figures it was estimated that the estate would pay 7s or 8s in the £l. It had been thought, that there would be a considerable . amount from life insurance to add to the assets, but, as creditors doubtless knew, in the case of death or bankruptcy of the assured this money was not available for creditors, and in any case the next-of-kin were claiming these amounts, so there would not be anything from that source. “The only other matters we can discuss are those of deceased’s seat on the Stock Exchange and that of deceased’s interest in an Otago claim syndicate/’ said Mr Fisher.

A letter was then read from the Stock Exchange, in which it was said that if creditors made no claim on the value of deceased’s seat (£250) members with claims against the estate would refrain from proving. Members had claims amounting to about, £6OO.

In view of the action of the Stock Exchange, Mr Fisher thought it would be well for creditors outside not to press for the value of the seat.

Four creditors’ representatives signed claims in order to form a quorum, the largest of these creditors being the [Diocesan Board ([£s^ooo) and Cllutha Mackenzie (£550). It was decided that the offer of members of the Stock Exchange be accepted with thanks, and that the matter of the interest of deceased in the Otago claim syndicate be investigated, it being stated that deceased held a £SOO share on which £3OO was owing, and that this asset might be a very good proposition. Some of deceased’s personal effects were produced for inspection. Among these was a silver cigarette case presented to him by the Prince of Wales. There was some discussion about the Prince’s gift, and whether it could be sold, as it was only of intrinsic value to Garland’s family. Finally, the disposal of these effects was left in the hands of the Official Assignee, and the meeting adjourned.
