MR. COATES IN AMERICA
WjILL CONFER WITH MR
COOLIDGE.
San Francisco, October 3.
“Trade conditions between New Zealand and the United States can be greatly improved. We buy three times as much from you as you buy from New Zealand. We would like to see that about even. If you will buy three times as much from us as you do now, trade will increase correspondingly.” This was the reply of Mr Coates, when asked to speak of methods of improving the trade relations between the two countries.
He added: “With little more encouragement our shipping facilities can be further increased. Moreover, we can offer the best the world affords for your citizens seeking a holiday.”
He emphasised that both countries were in the forefront in democratic legislation. He praised the American troops, one company of which he commanded in their first action in the Great A ar. Mr Coates when at Washington, will confer with President Coolidge and the British Ambassador. His party was given a great reception on arrival by the Makura, and later was tendered a joint luncheon by the Chamber of Commerce and the Commercial Club.
