DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

COMMITTEE MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the above was held last night. There were present: Messrs F. Woods (chairman), Rev. W. H. Walton, J. K. Homblow, A. Stevenson, A. Alsop, IT. Hutchins, Jno. Ross, the secretary (Mr R. Rangiheuea) and headmaster (Mr F. Mason). An apology for absence was received from Mr Perreau.

Formal correspondence was read and received from the Board. Resolved that the Chairman and Mr- Alsop investigate matters in connection with sanitation etc., at the side school, with power to act. Resolved to request the Board to forward payment of subsidies as the non-receipt of same had straitened the finances of the committee. Resolved to ask the Board to increase the cost per capita from fid to fld for conveying children to school from Motuiti and Himatangi. Mr Alsop reported that everything was satisfactory at the side school. ' A similar report on the main school was received from the Rev. W. H. Walton. Messrs Hornblow and Hutchins were appointed visitors for the month.

The headmaster reported that the roll numbers at the end of the month were as follows: Primary Department, 417, Secondary Department, 33; Side School, 43, a total of 493. The average attendances for the quarter just ended were 363, 31, and 37 respectively. This is somewhat lower than usual, but is due to the prevalence of influenza during the early part of the quarter. Attendance is now back to normal. Staff.—The staff lias been regular in its attendance, but Miss Dent has unfortunately been confined to her home through sickness for some days, and it will be over a week before she can return to duty. Miss Lash, of Wanganui, will act as relieving teacher as from to-morrow. Inspection of Secondary Department. —On September 22nd, the Senior Inspector visited the school for the purpose of inspecting the secondary classes. As the result of. his visit several pupils were recommended for their senior free places, and eleven pupils of the primary school were granted their proficiency certificates, after examination, and have been drafted to the Junior Secondary division, thus bringing the totni roll of the secondary classes to 44 on October Ist. % The Inspector expressed great, satisfaction with the work being done by the Secondary teachers, and states that with the provision of suitable accommodation, work of a very high order will be accomplished.
