POST AND TELEGRAPH MATTERS.

POSTMASTER’S REPORT.

At the monthly meeting of the Foxton of Commerce, held last Thursday night, the local postmaster (Mr J. Newton) reported on the result of a public meeting convened at Moutoa last month and touched on various matter in connection with his department. Mr Newton said that as a result of the. public meeting at Moutoa he had obtained fifteen new subscribers to the local exchange and there was every possibility of obtaining five more. A canvass had also been made of Himatangi and Oroua Downs, and he was pleased to report that here, again, success had attended their endeavours. When all these new subscribers, about fifty in all, had been connected up, an all night service, if wanted, was an assured fact. I RURAL DELIVERIES.

Mr Newton also touched on the rural delivery question, and said that he intended to concentrate in this direction as soon as the new telephone subscribers had been fixed up. It was possible that a delivery would be made around Himatangi and Oroua Downs, and out Moutoa and Marotiri way. Residents in these districts would ithen*. have their address as Foxton. The man in charge of the rural delivery would be able to carry parcels, sell stamps and postal notes, as well as collect and deliver letters, etc. With telephones installed in their houses and a rural delivery, each home would be its own post office. All this would mean that these residents would regard Foxton as their centre and Foxton, from a business point of view’, would benefit. The rural delivery would cost only/ about £1 per annum, the boxes being 8/- each. As a result of obtaining new subscribers to the Foxton exchange local unemployment had, in a small measure, also been assisted, two extra men had been given employment.

Mr Newton said he w r as also pleased to report that his application for a motor truck for the local P. and T. office had been sanctioned and he expected delivery of the lorry within a day or so. CHILDREN’S MONEY SAVING SCHEME.

Mr Newton said he would like to see some encouragement given to children to save their pennies instead of spending them. The postoffiiee had a stamp saving system which was being taken up w T ell by local children. In fact fifty new’ accounts had been opened during the last month. He was also pleased to report that the stamp selling machine was proving very satisfactory both from a public convenience and financial point of view’. The President (Mr J. K. Hornblow) expressed pleasure at having as a member of the Chamber, such an enthusiastic citizen as Mr Newton and Foxton was fortunate indeed in possessing a post master who took such a keen interest in his duties. The Chamber appreciated his efforts and he could at all'times be assured of its co-operation.
