AN UNUSUAL VISITOR.
KIWI FOUND IN WELLINGTON STREET.
When walking up Molesworth St., Wellington, a few nights ago, Mr Kellet, of Poplar Grove, came upon what appeared, in the darkness, to be an enormous hedgehog. On elosei' inspection, Mr Kellet received a decided shock when he discovered that he had found a kiwi. It had a deformed foot.
Delighted at his discovery, Mr Kellet took the bird home, and put it in his back yard, where it soon began burrowing for worms. It is stated that a few weeks ago n large rhea was caught by an oppossum trapper in Westland and the police were endeavouring to gain possession of it. Apparently it vanished and as it is highly improbable that two such birds would have been known at the same time to have suffered damage to the feet, the belief is that the West Coast captive was brought to Wellington. A later message states that despite the fact that every care was taken of it, the kiwi died at the Museum at 9.30 o’clock yesterday morning. The bird, which is known to naturalists as “apteryx haastii,” spent the night in a shed near the Museum, but when visited early yesterday morning, was in an exhausted condition. Every effort to nurse it, back to health was made, but death intervened. Whether the cold proved too much for it or not is not known. The bird will probably be stuffed.
