DISCUSSED BY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. INSPECTION OF MILLS TO BE MADE. At Thursday night’s meeting qf the Foxton Chamber of Commerce the President (Mr J. K. Hornblow) spoke briefly on the hemp industry and suggested that members of the Chamber should visit some of the mills in the Manawatu. He also thought it would be a good idea to invite" Mr A. Seifert to give an address to the Chamber on the flax industry. Mr M. E. Perreau spoke in support of the suggestion. It Avas decided to adopt the President’s suggestion and a tour of inspection of the Wlhitaiinui and Miranui mills will be made one Wednesday in September. Mr I. Corn referred to the possibilities of the flax industry and spoke interestingly of experiments he had made in the extraction of ascetic acid and alcohol- from the waste products. Mr MeMurray said that some new method of preparing flax Avas necessary. lie considered it Ai’ould be a good idea to make representations Government to have the bonus granted some years ago for a new method of flax dressing reinstated on the Estimates. . It was decided to Avrite the N.Z. Flaxmillers’ Association, recommending that the Government be approached to re-instate a. substantial sum on the Estimates for improved methods of treating flax.
