FLAX REFUSE AND FISHING.
DISCUSSED BY ACCLAMATISATION SOCIETY. The secretary of the Foxton Harbour Board wrote last night to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society pointing out that some time past flaxmiflers above the Whirokino Bridge had been allowing flax refuse to find its way into the shipping channel of the Manawatu River. As these millers were outside the jurisdiction of the board, the matter was referred to the Marine Department for action, and the latter had advised that the Wellington Acclimatisation Society had full powers to deal with the matter under the Fisheries Act, on account of the river being a trout stream. The secretary of the Acclimatisaton Society (Mr. C.T. Dasent) said that the refuse which was inimical to trout was not the long strands, but the finer stuff which sank to the bottom of the river and choked the 'trouts’ gills. Other members spoke of the nuisance caused by the floating flax fibre along the beach, where flounder fishers frequently had their nets burst owing to. its presence. It was decided to await a fuller report.
