SHOCKING TRAGEDY.
MOTHER DROWNS CHILD
Waimate, August 2,
A shocking tragedy occurred at Hook, eight miles from Waimate, yesterday, when Mrs Alma Robinson, wife of Leonard Peter Robinson. farmer, apparently attempted to drown her young children with the result that the four-months’ old baby died and the eldest girl was sent to hospital suffering from water in the lungs. While the husband was attending church, Mrs Robinson took her four children to the Hook creek nearby, returning to the house about noon with-wet clothes. Noticing their drenched condition, Miss Adnerson, the household help, took the baby from the mother’s arms and found it was dead. Miss Anderson then went to search for the other children, finding two just outside the house, and the eldest girl, aged fii years, unconscious in a paddock. The clothes of all the children were wet.
The eldest girl was brought round by the father, who had returned home, and was taken to hospital suffering from water on the lungs. Mrs Robinson had been in bad health for some time and apparently her mind became deranged.
An inquest on the baby will be held to-morrow.
