CORRESPONDENCE was read and dealt with as follows : From the Education Board in regard to the native reserve adjoining the school site, stating that the plan for the High School building could not be gone on with until the question of site is settled. —Referred to Messrs Hornblow, Woods, Perreau and Walton with power to act. It was resolved to ask parents of children attending the local State School from Motuiti and Hinmtangi to furnish the names and ages of their children and state the distances they have at present to walk to school; also to furnish the names hnd addresses of parents to the headmaster.
A vote of thanks was accorded the chairman for assisting the committee re finance. -
The matter of removing stumps in the school grounds was left in the hands of Messrs Hutchins and Woods. It was decided to loan gardening tools, etc,, to the side school. Messrs Perreau and Wlalton were appoinetd visitors for the month. Accounts amounting to £SO 2s fid were passed for payment. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The Headmaster submitted the following report for the month of July:—School Rolls: secondary 33; primary, 421; side school 40; total 494. Owing to the prevalence of influenza and the recent bad weather, the attendance during the past month has been considerably below normal, the percentage being 78.3, as against 92.6 for the whole of last quarter. To-day’s attendance, however, shows a marked improvement being 89.5 per cent, of the roll number, the absentees being chiefly from the infant department. Three teachers have also been away for short periods, suffering from ‘“flu.” Last week the Education Board’s Architect, Mr. E. Hodge, visited the school and informed me that the following matters will be put in hand during the present month:— Repairs to roof and spouting, provision of additional hat pegs, provision of new blinds for north side windows of the school, painting of all outside woodwork of the school and painting of headmaster’s, residence. He also recommended that the radiators be attended to during the comming summer, and stated that the work of improving the school grounds at present in hand would be subsidised by the Board. On account of the- present swimming baths’ carnival it has been quite impossible for me to inaugurate a school sports shop day, in order to raise funds for sports. Something, however, should be done at an early date to .provide funds for the purpose and I would welcome whatever assistance and suggestions the Committee can give. Mr. Alsop reported re side-school requirements and the laying out of garden plots. His offer to fill in holes in play ground, provided assistance was given, was accepted with thanks.
