LOCAL AND GENERAL .
Yesterday was the shortest day of the year. The Pahiatua Presbyterian congiegation are extending a “eall” to the Rev. Prank McDonald of the local Presbyterian charge. The matter will oftrne before the local congregation at an early date. The Patea Harbour Board has recently experienced considerable dillieuliy through the silling-np of the channel, and with the view of having llidj trouble definilblxj removed, employed a Wellington firm —Messrs. R. W. Holmes and Son- — to report on the matter. The opinion was expressed, by them that the accumulations wfcre largely, if not wholly, due to sand being blown into the channel, and the board’s Works Committee is! now to undertake the planting of marram grass the bare sand banks in the hope of checking the nuisance. He forgot the tobacco! A backblocks settler in the Par North, where there are no trains or coaches, makes monthly trips by dray to the nearest township for stores. Last time lie discovered on getting home that he had forgotten the month’s supply of tobacco. There was consternation in the camp! The men had rather he had forgotten anything than that! Nothing daunted, the boss harnessed up again next day and started for the distant township once more for the tobacco. The weed is almost as necessary as food to the men of the outback. Bo it is to lots of other
men. The great thing is to pick a brand as free from nicotine as possible. Most of the imported brands are full of it. Thai’s where they differ from our New Zealand-grown tobaccos, which contain so little
nicotine that they may be smoked all day, even to excess, without the slightest after effects. They are toasted and do not affect the heart or throat. Ask for “Iviverhead (told,” mild; “Navy Cut” (Bidldog). medium; or “Cut plug No. 10” (Bullshead), full strength.*
Mr Edward Rowlatt has been appointed a scrutineer on behalf of those opposed to the Town Hall loan proposal at to-morrow's poll, being nominated bLA. 1?. Osborne, AY. D. Bauckham, \Y. Kirkland, M. E. Seabury and R. M. Parkes. The Council’s appointee is Mr D. Ogilvie. Mr R. Parker met with a nasty accident while double-banking a boy home on his bicycle at dinnertime. When negotiating the Levin Rd. corner the front forks snapped and both parties were thrown heavily to the ground. The boy escaped with a shaking but Mr Parker sustained a severe gash over his left eye and other minor abrasions. He received medical attention and was able to return to work this afternoon.
