Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, JUNK 22 , 1926. TO-MORROW’S POLL .
A POLL of the local ratepayers will 1»' taken to-morrow to sanrlion a* loan oC £(>()()() to supplement flip amount required Cor (lie roercction of the Town Hall, and we hope all ratepayers able to do so, will record their votes. Had the Borough Council attempted to rebuild the hall with the money available from the insurances' of the building destroyed, such action wiuld have been retrogressive and prejudicial to the welfare of (he borough. The Council took the right course in sanctioning the reerection if a structure worthy of the town and one that will meet the requirements of the public for years to come. Their decision was arrived at by a knowledge that the extra capital required would not impose ;t further burden upon the ratepayers and that the public were clamant for a new Hall. In the preparation of plans and specifications, the greatest care was exercised by the Council to eliminate needless expense and to keep within a safe financial limit. The whole details have been fully discussed and plaeed before the public and ratepayers. Opposition is to be expected—not so much to the necessity for a Town Hall as to the fear of increased rates. From the figures submitted, there should be no anxiety on Ibis score. In fact, under capable management and loyal support, there is every reason to expect that the hall will not only be self-supporting, but revenueproducing. In the circumstances we confidently recommend ratepayers to give the loan proposal their support and urge them to demonstrate that approval at tlie ballot box.
