LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Five hundred million passengers were carried by the London-Mid-land-Scottish Railway last year without a single fatal accident.

An excellent suggestion was made last evening by Mr. \Y. Moynihan at a meeting of the Management, Committee of the Ilorowhenua District Rugby Council, ' that. season ticket-holders should have seats reserved for them at all rep. games, both here and in Palmerston North. It was decided to allot two full rows of seats on one side of the 3 Levin grand-stand, for the holders of season tickets, who will thus enjoy the privileges to which they are entitled —provided they claim the seats before the match starts.

Tiie Palmerston North Hospital Board was advised at Thursday’s meeting by the Public Trustee that the Board is the residuary legatee in the estate of the late Mr. James Kirby, formerly a Palmerston North resident, who died in Wellington in Mareli. The assets of the widow’s life interest exceed £SOOO. The other bequests include £IOOO to the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland, £IOOO to the Baptist Church Orphanage at Manurewa, and £SOO each to the Methodist orphanages at Christchurch and Auckland. The amount coming to the Hospital Board is estimated at between £2500 and £3OOO.

An English tourist while “doing” the Waikato recently was surprised and disgusted to notice so many Maori women enjoying their pipes. On his return to Auckland he mentioned the matter to an old colonist. remarking that it was a sure sign of lehe degeneracy of the Maori .race when their women smoked pipes. Said the New Zealander: “Well, if that is so, the Irish women of (he working class must have been degenerating for a good while, because I remember seeing them smoking clays in Dublin when I was a boy.” The tourist said no more. There is nothing wrong with pipe smoking for man or woman so long as the right tobacco is used. Choose a brand as free from nicotine as you can. That’s all. Our New Zea-land-grown tobaccos contain only a trilling percentage of nicotine, and you can’t .beat them for flavour and aroma. You can smoke them for hours and they won’t do you any harm. Ask for “Riverhead Gold,” mild; “Navy Cut” (Bulldog), medium; or “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullhead), full strength.*
