Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, JUNE 32, 1926. PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS.
A special meeting of ladies lias been convened for the 17th ins!., lo discuss ways and means of raising funds for public swimming baths. This question has been before the public for some time and a committee was set up to organise a big art union, but failed to secure guarantors for £SOO lo purchase the gold. A subsequent meeting decided to accept the offer of the Mayoress lo convene a meeting of ladies to discuss the question with the object of co-operating in the movement. Approximately the sum of £2OOO is required. The ladies may be able to formulate a scheme ami their willingness to assist should stimulate the committee to further effort.
There are two points, however, apart, from the raising of the money. which should not lie baulked. Firstly a suitable site and, secondly, in whom will the site and control lie vested! Tn our opinion if the money for the construction of the Paths is raised, the site and control should he transferred to the municipality, as representing the whole community. We take it that the present effort is an alternative to the Borough Council submitting a loan proposal to the ratepayers for the purpose of providing baths.
