“RED CAP” PORTERS

FOR PALMERSTON STATION. Official confirmation of the intention of the Railway Department to allow two “red-cap” porters to ply for hire on the Palmerston railway station lias been received by the Palmerston North stationmastev. Auckland and Wellington possess several “red-cap” porters and it is understood that the new method is proving successful. Under the conditions of employment a license is obtained from the authorities and no other person is permitted to ply for hire as a porter within the precincts of the station. The porters’ distinguishing feature will be their red cap and the charges have been fixed at sixpence for the transporting of luggage, etc., from the station to the train..
