HEMP MARKET.
The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of May have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: — The detailed particulars of the hemp graded are: —
Thirty-one bales at Picton were graded fine. Sixty-six bales at A uckland, 112 at Wellington, 74 at Foxton and 4 at Lyttelton were rejected, and two bales at Auckland were condemned. The number of: bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Fine 31 (47), good fair 496 (012), high fair 3521 (3024), low fair 2440 (2959), common 432 (295) rejected 250 (139), condemned 2, (2), making a total of 7184 bales as against 7078 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 106 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 1014, Wellington 2082, Foxton 1536, Wairoa 442, Picton 87, Blenheim 155, Dunedin 166, Pt. Chalmers 75, Bluff 900, and Lyttelton 67. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow: —
Forty bales at Auckland, 33 at Wellington, 4 at Foxton and 155 at the Bluff were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period being given in parenthesis: —Ist grade 188 (370), 2nd. grade 1437(1161), 3rd grade 311 (422), condemned 232 (41), a total of 2168 bales as against 1994 bales graded the same period last year, an increase of 174 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 504, Wellington 610, Foxton 170, Wairoa 72, Picton 32, Blenheim 104, Pt. Chalmers 41, Bluff 453, Dunedin 19, Lyttelton 13, and Waikuku 150. Stripper Tow: —153 bales at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Eleven at Wellington were graded 3rd grade. A total of 194 bales as against 150 bales graded the same period last year, showing an increase of 44 bales. Stripper Slips: —Eleven at Auckland, and 11 at the Bluff were graded 2nd grade. Four at Auckland, 18 at Wellington and 32 at the Bluff were passed for export. Two at Auckland were condemned. The total number graded was 78 bales as against 227 bales greaded the same period last year, a decrease of 149 bales.
