FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

1 QUARTERLY MEETING. The usual quarterly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’ Buildings last night, presided over by the President (Mr. A. E. Admore). Also present were Messrs. J. Ross, M. E. Perreau, J. K. Hornblow, D. Christie, W. T. Winstanley, G. F. Smith, F. Woods, R. McMurray and the secretary (Mr. F. Rimmer). MOTION OF SYMPATHY. Prior to the commencement of business a motion of condolence and sympathy was passed to the President in tlie recent death of his brother. OVERDUE SUBS. The chairman reported that as a result of a canvass by Messrs. G. F. Smith and F. W/oods, subs to the amount of £7 had been collected. A vote of thanks was accorded the collectors. Mr. Smith reported that lie had received several refusals when asking for subs, and on one or two occasions disparaging remarks .had been passed on the activities of the Chamber. Peronally he thought the Chamber was most important and necessary to the town. Mr. Hornblow said lie was surprised to hear Die attitude certain business men of the town had adopted towards the Chamber. He then gave a brief outline of the history of the Chamber since its inception, fourteen years ago. It was decided to revise the list of members and write those in arrears asking them to pay up before Die annual meeting to be held next month. It was also resolved to draw up a resume of the activities of the Chamber since its inception, to be circulated. A DVERTISING FOXTON. A letter was received from the Auckland Weekly suggesting that the Chamber insert an advertisement advertising the town in the Christmas number of that journal. The chairman moved that the letter be tabled. Mr. McMurray: Pit move we take a full page. Mr. Perreau advocated an advertisement, but smaller than that suggested by Mr. McMurray. Mr. Christie said funds for this purpose should be in hand before anything definite was done. Mr. Hornblow asked what the Chamber would advertise. Mr. Christie: The Beach. Mr. Hornblow considered that if Die Beach was to be advertised then those who would derive benefit therefrom should assist in the matter. Accommodation would also be necessary at the seaside for tourists and visitors. He suggested a general advertisement. Mr. Winstanley said that if the fact that the Beach was overcrowded annually was advertised they would find that people would erect accommodation houses there Mr. Hornblow considered that people would not erect accommodation houses at the Beach to be let only for a period of six or seven weeks a year. On the motion of Mr. Perreau it was decided to refer the letter to the Harbour Board. NOTIFICATION OF FLOODS. Mr 1 . Winstanley said that he had been asked by farmers to bring before the notice of the Chamber the fact that no reports in connection with floods were posted at the Post Office on Sundays. Farmers were greatly inconvenienced by not being able to obtain these reports on the day mentioned. After discussion it was decided that the President wait on the Postmaster with a view to having reports posted up on Sundays. GENERAL. The resignation of Mr. R. Rangilieuea was accepted with regret. It was decided .that the Mayor arrange a civic send-off and presentation to Mr. and Mrs Healey, date to be arranged by the Mayor. The following committee was set up to go into the matter: Messrs. Admore, Hornblow, Christie, Woods, Ross, and Winstanley.
