An authentic story of a battle royal off the Bay of Islands, between a mother whale and a swordfish is related by fishermen. The whale was carrying her 10ft baby lucked under a protecting flapper, when a swordfish attacked, making fierce rushes at the mother. She, in turn, swung fiercely to meet them, churning the surface of the ocean to foam. The end came for the attacker, who, becoming confident of escaping the great dukes of the whale, swung within reach of them for u brief period. Up went, the huge tail, and descended again wit ha bang like a cannon shot, sending cascades of foam skyward. With hardly a pause, the whale departed on her course. The fishermen found, on investigation, a giant swordfish that had hecn literally smashed to pulp by the terrific blow from those deadly flukes. —Luminary.

Robert Louis Stevenson once declared, according to one of his biographers: “No woman should marry a man who doesn’t smoke,” and Stevenson, it must be admitted knew human nature. Another famous man of letters, BulwerLytton, wrote (see his novel, “What will he do with it'?”) “He who doth not smoke hath either known no greater grief, or refuseth himself the softest consolation next to that which comes from heaven.” As to the harmfulness of the habit much—very much—depends upon the tobacco. Brands heavily charged with nicotine are best avoided. In that respect and in other respects our own New Zealand grown tobaccos hold pride of place, because they contain comparatively little nicotine and may therefore be indulged in ad. lib., without affecting nerves or heart. Doubtless that is why they are finding favour with so many smokers. They are on sale everywhere, and are adapted to all tastes. “Riverliead Gold” in mild aromatic, “Toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog) a delightful medium, and “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bull’s Head label) a tine full-flavoured tobacco.*
