FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the annual report to be submitted to the annual meeting of householders to be held at the school on Monday for the purpose of electing a committee for the ensuing year: “In presenting the annual report your committee have pleasure in stating that the period just closed has been a very busy one as regards improved school environment and also from an educational point of view viz., the establishment of' a District High School. The accumulated subsidies of past years have been uplifted, amounting approximately to £165. This sum has been expended in providing concrete paths approaching and surrounding the school, together with the erection of a number of seats on the sunny side of the school for convenience of pupils . A concrete retaining wall has been erected on the south side, maintaining the hank in its position. A more suitable base and foundation has been provided for the (lag staff. These works exhausted the subsidy monies, but, in addition, improvements were effected to tlie tennis court area by the erection of new fences, repair of the court and providing seats. Another important innovation was the institution of graduated class libraries throughout the school, the necessary funds being obtained from the subsidised proceeds of the annual school concert. Through the efforts of your committee electric light was also installed in the headmaster’s residence. The work of the janitor has given every satisfaction. After years of agitation the status of the school lias at last been raised to that of a District High school, thus providing secondary education for senior scholars. It will be incumbent upon the incoming committee to take the necessary steps to obtain an up-to-date structure for the accommodation of the secondary classes. The annual school concert, prize-giving and picnic were all highly successful functions although in future the picnic should not encroach on other school funds. We are pleased to note that practically no changes were made in the personnel of the staff during the year, as such changes seriously interfere with the continuity of class work so essential to the educational welfare of the children. Harmony and co-operation has obtained between your committee, headmaster and staff. Your committee desire to place on record its high appreciation of the enthusiastic and faithful services of the headmaster (Mr F. A. Mason) which finds endorsement by parents and pupils. Your committee desire to extend to him, at this meeting, its heartfelt sympathy in the irreparable loss he has sustained through the death of his wife, who evinced a keen interest in the welfare of the school and in the health and comfort of the pupils. Your committee desire to express their Thanks and appreciation to all for voluntary services rendered and to Air. F. C. Hay for professional advice. Your committee took the initial steps to institute a school dental clinic and your chairman and secretary interviewed those responsible for the Levin scheme and obtained information as to its working. The services of a. dentist were obtained for the local clinic, but we regret to state that parents are not availing themselves of the splendid opportunity Ihus afforded. Your committee is indebted to Air. Alt'. Eraser, member of the Board, who has at all times co-operated in matters affecting the welfare of the school. Your committee, with the exception of Air. E. Cowley, who is'shortly leaving for England (and whom we wish bon voyage and’God speed), offer themselves for re-election.”
