DOMINION BANKRUPTCIES.

FIGURES FOR PAST YEAR.

The number of bankruptcies in New Zealand during last year totalled 653 compared with 670 in 1924 and 674 in 1923. In 1922 the number was 695 which may be taken as the lowest point of the' commercial depression. The abstract of statistics from which the figures are taken shows that the state of financial ‘stress prevalent in the community has undergone little change since the depression of 1921. During'last year 154 farmers were adjudicated and general labourers accounted for 100 failures. It is apparent from the figures that the farmers who were on highpriced land when the slump ensued were unable to carry on and had fought a losing fight against economic conditions. Detailed figures are as follows, those of 1924 being in parenthesis: Farmers, 143 (178).; labourers, 100 (81); bush sawmillers 17 (6) ; builders, 25 (22); contractors? 12 (17); carpenters, 17 (6); taxi-dri-vers, 20 (4); carriers (12); storekeepers, 20 (22); butchers, 15 (18); bakers, 10 (9); salesmen, 10 (14); married women, 10 (6).
