MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING,

The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday, Sir James Wilson presiding. There were also present:— Councillors McKelvie, Fagan, Penny, Barber, Boyce and Hunt. CORRESPONDENCE. . From the Public Works Department, drawing attention to the motor lorry regulations, which required the owner of every lorry to cause to be entered up daily particulars as to its use, including the distances traversed and the names of the controlling authorities in the areas in which the lorry operated and to furnish such information to the licensing authority. —Referred to the traffic inspector for action.

From the New Zealand Counties’ Association, relative to the practice of motorists leaving empty benzine tins.on the roads and the danger arising therefrom and asking the Council to take steps to abate this dangerous nuisance. It was resolved to instruct Council employees to return benzine tins to the depot and to continue prosecuting those who dumped tins on the roadway. From the Foxton Borough Council, asking that the County co-oper-ate in surfacing the boundary roads, in order that the work could be undertaken with the utmost despatch.—Decided to give consideration to the request when the Foxton Borough commences the work.

From the Manawatu-Oroua River Board, calling upon the Council to remove all willows and other vegetation growing on the banks of the Oroua river, adjoining the Council’s property, likely to cause obstruction to the free flow of the water in the river.—Refered to the engineer for action; From Overseer, Oroua Downs Drainage Board, requesting the payment of £2O to the Forestry Department, out of the Board’s funds as the Board’s contribution towards the cost of the new outlet from Puki Puki Lake to the sea.—Cr McKelvie reported that the outlet was doing satisfactory work and the payment was in order.—lt was resolved to pay the amount. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT.

The tramway manager reported that the accounts for the month of March showed a credit of £19.6s 3d. The chief items of traffic were: Coal, 148§ tons; manure, 158£ tons; general merchandise, 68 tons; stock, 103 trucks; metal, 1375 cubic yards and fares realised £2 17s 4d. —Adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The County engineer submitted his report on the works in the various ridings for the past month.

Awahou.—A lorry was now employed .carting dumps of metal along 'the Foxton- Shannon road. Metal was being delivered by contract on the Whirokino road, and he had made arrangements to supply an extra 100 yards on the Foxton end of the above road for the sum of 8s a yard. He understood that the Whirokino deviation was held up, pending the decision of the ‘Drainage Board commission. lo(U cubic yards of metal had been crushed and had been delivered at the various sidings and dumps along the tramline, He had compiled a list of road-making machinery required for the re-construction work on the main highways, and it would be necessary for the Council to make financial arrangements for purchase of the most important units. , . . It was decided to refer the whole of the purchase of machinery to a special committee jior report. It was further resolved to purchase the machinery required through the Main Highways Board.—Report received.
