THREE MONTHS IMPRISONMENT.
FOR USING INDECENT LANGUAGE.
At the Palmerston Police Court on Tuesday, William Matthew, aged 31 years, of Makerua, guilty to using indecent language, ' in the Square on Easter Monday. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said a good number of people were about when the offence took place. Accused was calling out in a loud voice and used disgusting language. According to a constable he was not drunk. Previously he had been convicted for assault. Matthews told the Bench that he suffered from shell-shock and when he had drink he was not responsible for his actions.
In imposing a sentence of three months imprisonment, the Bench emphasised the seriousness of the offence which, they stated, rendered accused liable to a year in gaol.
