LOVERIDGE DEFEATS BLACKBURN.
Westport, Yesterday
At the Westport Boxing Association’s tournament on Saturday evening, Dic-k Loveridge (Taranaki) 10.6, wrested the New Zealand welter-weight championship from Clarrie Blackburn (Australia) 10.7. Blackburn retired at the -end of the eighth round, stating that his vis ion was affected by a knock over the eye. As far as it went, the fight was a good one, but Loveridge was more full of vim and had a good lead when Blackburn withdrew.
News has been received in Palmerston North of the success of Bert Brown, former featherweight champion of New Zealand since his emigration to Canada nine months ago. At Montreal on January 25, Brown gained further distinction by defeating Eddie Brady, an American top-notcher, in his class, thus earning the right to meet “Kid” Roy, the Canadian feather champion, £or the title. This match will take place on April 15 at Montreal.
