ROSE AT DUNEDIN
Dunedin, March 20. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Championships were concluded to-day in brilliant sunshine and before a record attendance of 12,000. A heavy breeze swept the ground, which was somewhat dead consequent upon the rain overnight. The conditions were all against the breaking of records. The star performers of the meeting were Rose, Leadbetter, Lay and Batsone. Rose was given a great reception when he went out for the mile, and he was cheered throughout the race. He quickly ran out into the lead and none of the other four starters was capable of going with him. He ran the first quarter in 61 3-5 sec., the half in 2min. 9 4-5 secs., the threequarters of a mile in 3min. 19 4-5 sec., and full distance in 4min. 28secs. Considering the conditions it was a great effort, and he showed not a suspicion of distress at the end.
