GAS WORKS

JANUARY WORKING.

The amount of gas manufactured during the month of January was 329,100 ft., which with the amount in the holders on January Ist, 13,400 ft. made a total of 342,500 ft. During the month 280,200 ft. was used by consumers, 25,000 ft. at the works and there was 15,600 ft. in the holder on February Ist, making a total of 320,800 ft., leaving 21,700 ft., representing 6.3 per cent, unaccounted for. The amount of coal carbonised was 30 tons, from which 10.966 c.ft. per ton was produced, together with 5 tons 18ewts of coke. The earnings for the month totalled £192 8s 6d and was made up as follows: —Gas sales (lighting) £4O 2s 3d, heat and power £96 14s 9, coke sales £l7 15s 7d, tar sales £25 4s Od, fittings £8 11s 6d, miscellaneous £4 0s sd. The expenditure totalled £2ll 10s 2d and was made up as follows: — Coal £B6 Is 6d, wages and salaries £4O 14/-, fittings £l4 17s lid, engine repaii’ and oil £1 10s Od, repairs £2 19s lOd, cartage and freight £4 10s 3d, Power Board £1 5s Od, Interest and Sinking Fund £59 11s Bd. The gas manager reported that everything at the works was in good working condition and that most of the time during the month had been occupied in cleaning out consumer’s pipes and services. One service was renewed. The fact that, with the advent of the electric power, the gas works was losing a good .deal of revenue was stressed. Cr. Winstanley advocated boosting gas for heating purposes. The Clerk said that this question had already received every consideration. The proportion of gas cookers in uso in Foxton was probably higher than in any other town in New Zealand. Cr. McMurray considered the position was not serious. The receipts were certainly not high, but the expenditure had considerably decreased. With the coming of winter more gas would be used. Cr. Adams said the cost of gas was too dear. Cr. Winstanley said the cost of gas in Foxton was cheaper than anywhere else in New Zealand. The reports were adopted after j further desultory discussion.
