AREA OF VALUABLE FLAX. DESTROYED.

SWAMP BURNT OUT AT OROUA DOWNS. A serious outbreak of fire occurred in Messrs. Ross, Rough and Co.’s flax swamp at Oroua Downs on Friday evening. The cause of the fire is a mystery, but the outbreak evidently occurred in the vicinity of the Pukipuki lake and the fire, fanned by a south-westerly wind swept through a large portion of the swamp, about 200 acres of green blade being destroyed. Some adjoining property was also slightly affected. Despite the efforts of a gang of fire-figh'.ns ihe fire was not got under way until Sunday morning. The glare of the conflagrations was plah.lv seen in Foxton on Friday night. Messrs Ross, Rough and Co. are heavy losers as the swamp contained first-class flax which the owners were just beginning to mill.
